He began his learning about psychiatry while engaged in clinical research at University of California, San Diego. He spent several years living and studying in India, where he deepened his knowledge of both conventional medicine and alternative and complementary medicine approaches native to India. He explored the integration of conventional Western approaches with ancient healing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga and Ayurveda.
Dr. Goel has an interest in the treatment of trauma and he worked with veterans in the psychiatry department at the VA Hospital in Washington DC. Dr. Goel pursued Adult Psychiatry Residency at the University of Kansas and then Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at the University of Toledo. He accumulated significant clinical experience as a psychiatrist while working at a busy community mental health center in Ohio.
Dr. Goel uses a collaborative approach to psychiatric treatment by integrating conventional evidence-based medicine and psychiatry with integrative and holistic approaches.
Dr. Goel specializes in psychotherapy and sensible psychopharmacology with children and adults. His key approach to psychotherapy is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). He works with patients to come up with optimal medication regimens when medications are needed. He aims to help patients to reduce the number and dose of medications to obtain the best results with the minimum side effects, using the guidance of clinical skills and genomic testing. Dr. Goel is particularly cautious with medication use in children and adolescents.
He believes truly caring about an individual and understanding them at their core is the first step in healing.
